A ski holiday in Alpe d'Huez offers everything that ski lovers could want. Alpe d'Huez is considered a good all-round resort - diverse and with a modern lift system. All levels of skier should find something there to challenge them on their ski holiday in Alpe d'Huez, with a 2230m vertical drop and a 16km black run considered two of its biggest pulls.
Off-piste skiing is excellent, with decent snowfalls, beautiful scenery and sunnier-than-average weather. However, advanced skiers will groan when the weather worsens, as many of the tougher slopes become inaccessible. Boarders will enjoy exploiting the off-piste options, as well as their own park, which has a very good half-pipe.
Heavily developed since the late '60s, Alpe d'Huez has remained a largely French resort and kept some of its earlier exclusivity, although it isn't one of the most attractive places. It still draws a large weekend crowd, with its own altiport and Grenoble only 90mins away.
Restaurants are good both on and off the mountain, but nightlife is little more than adequate. Fortunately, other post-skiing activities are quite extensive. The ski school in Alpe d'Huez is pretty good; for kids, they try to keep groups small. One of the resort's greatest hidden assets must be Vaujany, a satellite village which has kept its rural charm, has good services (including a superb crèche) and a fast cable-car link into the main ski area.
Overall, Alpe d'Huez is very good for a ski holiday, particularly for families who want to eat well, enjoy great scenery and have access to a ski domain to suit all levels.
